Surabhi Ghosh | Tile Up
March 21 – April 6, 2014
Culture Room, Brooklyn, NY
Drawing from applications of pattern that are equally functional and ornamental–tiles used for floors, walls, and roofs–Surabhi Ghosh hand cuts half-inch strips of upholstery vinyl and then combines, layers, and staggers them to form intricate motifs. Ghosh explores the way patterns build unpredictably, improvising polyrhythms that emerge through repetition. While “Tile Up” visually references geometric abstraction and decorative patterning, the material ties it back to a functional history.
