« Surabhi Ghosh’s work explores the relationship between materials and their contested cultural meanings. In The Weight of Our Myths, Ghosh looks at the construction of nationalist narratives and their role in overlapping projects of political dispossession.

Working primarily with textile materials and methods such as glass beads, reused garments and sewing, Ghosh uses repetition and pattern to evoke the cyclical history of protectionist political discourse. In her site-specific installations, she transforms the architecture of the room into a place where contradictory narratives meet, and where textile objects act as polyvalent metaphors for the burdens that the body – the self and the collective political entity – must bear.

By manipulating material and spatial contexts, Ghosh exposes the social tensions faced by the marginalized subject in the midst of divisive political abstractions. At the same time, she reveals the precariousness of the fictitious borders of exclusionary nationalism, imagining their dissolution through the intentional, progressive construction of collective will and transnational solidarities.

« Dans son travail, Surabhi Ghosh explore les relations entre les matériaux et leurs significations culturelles contestées. Dans Le poids de nos mythes, Ghosh s’intéresse à la construction de récits nationalistes et à leur rôle dans des projets de dépossession politique qui se chevauchent.

Travaillant principalement avec des matériaux et des méthodes propres aux textiles comme les billes de verre, les vêtements réutilisés et la couture, Ghosh fait usage de la répétition et du motif afin d’évoquer l’histoire cyclique du discours politique protectionniste. Dans ses installations in situ, elle transforme l’architecture de la salle en un lieu où les récits contradictoires se rencontrent et où les objets textiles agissent comme des métaphores polyvalentes des fardeaux que le corps – le soi et l’entité politique collective – doit supporter.

En manipulant les contextes matériels et spatiaux, Ghosh expose les tensions sociales que doit affronter le sujet marginalisé au milieu d’abstractions politiques qui divisent. Simultanément, elle révèle la précarité des frontières fictives du nationalisme d’exclusion en imaginant leur dissolution à travers la construction intentionnelle et progressive d’une volonté collective et de solidarités transnationales.
